Any publicity is good publicity?
In case you’ve lived under a rock you’ve no doubt seen the Coldplay kiss cam video that took down the CEO of Astronomer.
While everyone else was sending the viral video around to each other I couldn’t help but look at the business side.
How was the company going to react in the heat of the crisis?
Would they terminate the CEO?
Did they have a successor in the wings?
In our family business we had not just one but two crises that could have brought the company down. One was a coup attempt to take over the business from a manager and the other was an auto accident which incapacitated my father who was also the CEO.
Although both cases were very different circumstances we responded in an almost identical way. We found that the employees bonded together, filled the void and helped the business survive through the crises. After the crises settled down, we were able to proceed with a more formal plan of action. We eventually realized that the company was better off for having gone through the crises and seeing the employees step up and help us through it made us all that much better of a company. Maybe we all need a Coldplay kiss cam experience, but there are much easier ways to get your company prepared for a crisis.
